1. Where is the outpatient specialty clinic located?
The outpatient specialty clinic is part of Buchanan County Health Center, located at 1600 1st Street East in Independence, Iowa. This is on the far east end of Independence on Hwy 939.

Follow the signs that direct traffic to the “Emergency Room”, park, and use the north entrance.

The Admission staff will give you papers, if needed, and copy your most recent insurance card for the clinic physician’s home office. The clinic is located in the same area—northwest portion of the facility.

2. Do I need a referral from my family physician?
This varies from type of clinic, type of problem, and type of insurance.  The patient or family should call the number on the back of the insurance card to verify if a referral is needed.  It is best for the patient to communicate the need or plan to see the specialist to their family physician, to improve continuity of care, avoid duplication of services, and promote a team approach to their health care issues.
