  • CARDIOLOGY

    Branch of medicine that deals with study of heart function, diagnosis of heart disease, cardiovascular disease, promotes preventative care, and reduce cardiac risk factors.

    Type: Episodes of chest pain, heart attacks, heart valve problems, congestive heart failure, strong family history of coronary artery disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythms.

    Tests: Electrocardiogram (ECG) shows the electrical pattern of the heart.

    • Echocardiogram is an ultrasound of heart muscle and valves
    • Treadmill Stress test evaluates heart pattern during exercise
    • Lab work can evaluate cholesterol, kidney function, electrolyte levels after fluid medicines, triglycerides, markers to check heart muscle damage.
    • Holter Monitor digitally records and evaluates heart rate and rhythm for 24 or 48-hour periods while patient is at home and work.
    • Chest X-ray evaluate heart size and lung congestion
    • Cardiac Rehab Program is to strengthen and monitor cardiac status after heart attacks or heart surgeries

    DERMATOLOGY

    Branch of medicine that deals with treating the skin and its diseases.

    Type: Skin cancer, acne, keratosis, hair loss, eczema, moles, psoriasis, warts, and many others.

    Tests: Biopsy to diagnosis condition, cultures, medication, application to areas, cryosurgery (use of extreme cold probes to destroy unwanted tissue).

    EAR, NOSE & THROAT (ENT)

    Branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment conditions of the ear, nose, throat, tongue, hearing, and sinus.

    Type: Hearing loss, chronic ear infections, balance problems, earwax removal, recurrent nosebleeds, recurrent sinus infections, prolonged hoarseness, throat cancer, recurrent tonsillitis, severe snoring, or tongue lesions.

    Tests: In-house CT scan, mobile MRI biweekly, hearing testing in clinic same time as ENT clinic, microscope for exams and debridement, caudery for nose bleeds, nasopharyngeal scope to view throat and vocal chords, medical clearance for hearing aides.

    Surgery: Ear tube insertion or removal, tonsil and adenoid removal, biopsy of any suspicious lesion in the mouth or on the tongue.

    GYNECOLOGY

    Branch of medicine that deals with a broad range of women’s health issues.

    Types: Abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic-support problems, pelvic pain, urinary incontinence (leaking), interstitial cystitis, chronic bladder pain, abnormal PAP smear, menopause issues, infertility problems, sexual dysfunction, PMS, STDs (sexually transmitted diseases), and adolescent gynecology.

    Tests: colposcopy procedures, PAP smears, cultures, biopsies, lab work, and pelvic ultrasounds.

    NEPHROLOGY

    Branch of medicine that deals with the structure and function of the kidneys.

    Type:
    Renal insufficiency (diminished kidney function)
    Renal failure (kidney is failing)
    Uncontrolled high blood pressure
    Abnormal structure of kidneys

    Tests: Lab work to monitor kidney function, CT scan, kidney ultrasound, dialysis unit is attached to our hospital.

    NEUROLOGY

    Branch of medicine that deals with nervous system and the brain.

    Type: CVA (Cerebral Vascular Accidents) or known as “strokes”, TIA (Trans Ischemic Attacks) or known as “mini strokes”, all types of headaches, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Brain tumors, Alzheimer’s disease, neuropathy (numbness or tingling of a body part), carpel tunnel syndrome of the hands, increased confusion, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and other diseases of the brain.

    Tests: In-house CT scan, Mobile MRI biweekly, lab work to evaluate and assist diagnosis, carotid ultrasounds of the neck to check for obstructions, ultrasound of the heart (echocardiogram) to check for blood clot formation, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and water therapy pool.

    OBSTETRICS

    Branch of medicine that deals with pregnant women and provides prenatal care. Provide regular physician and nurse care during the pregnancy.

    Test: Ultrasound to monitor progress of pregnancy, lab work to monitor pregnancy and prevent complications. Deliveries planned to occur in Waterloo hospital.

    ONCOLOGY/HEMATOLOGY

    Branch of medicine that deals with all types of cancer. Hematology deals with blood disorders and blood-forming tissues.

    Type: any type of cancer invetigations, surgical patients that have found cancer and establish a plan of treatment options of chemotherapy, radiation treetments, or medications. Monitor points for recurrent cancer. Anema, thrombocytopenia (decrease in number of platelet cells), leukemia, abnormal levels of white or red blood cells.

    Tests: lab work, CT scan, mobile MRI biweekly, X-rays to evaluate function or abnormality of involved organs. Phlebotomy is the withdrawing of excessive blood. Blood transfusions are to replace blood loss. Outpatient injections or infusions to assist treatments that imrpove patients well being. Also have a mobile nuclear studies unit to assist in diagnosis, assist in monitoring disease progression, or therapy effectiveness.

    OPHTHALMOLOGY

    Branch of medicine that deals with the eye and its disease.

    Type: Visual changes, cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, chalazion (a bump on the eyelid), and eye injury.

    Tests: Eye exams and small vision testing, pressure measurement, evaluate for eye disease, and monitor existing conditions. Excision of chalazions, and cataract surgeries.

    ORTHOPEDIC

    Branch of medicine that deals with bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and cartilage.

    Type: Any broken bones, evaluate injuries for bone tissue damage, degeneration of joints due to arthritis, evaluation for joint replacement, carpel tunnel syndrome, ganglion cysts, evaluation of back pain.

    Tests: Digital X-ray system, mobile bi weekly MRI, joint injections of cortisone type medicines, Synvisc joint injections, cast applications and removals, brace or splint fittings as needed. Physical and Occupational therapy is available and therapy pool. Steroid epidural injection series for back pain can be arranged with our anesthesia staff.

    Surgery: carpel tunnel release, excision of ganglion cysts, knee scopes, trigger finger release, and fracture reductions.

    PHYSICAL MEDICINE/REHAB

    The specialty, which deals with “Quality of Life” and works to restore or maximize function. The Physiatrists care for patients with acute and chronic pain, and musculoskeletal problems like back and neck pain, tendonitis, pinched nerves and fibromyalgia. They also treat people who have experienced catastrophic events resulting in paraplegia, quadriplegia, or traumatic brain injury, and individuals who have had strokes, orthopedic injuries, or neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, polio, or ALS. They accept all ages from elderly to the pediatric population.

    Type: low back pain, sport-related injury, birth defect, trauma recovery, MS, spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, amputation, cancer, nerve injury, neck pain, arthritis, tendonitis, work-related injury, repetitive stress injury, muscular dystrophy.

    Tests: portable EMG testing, nerve conduction studies, therapeutic exercise, physical and occupational therapy, heat and cold therapy, prescription medication, neurostimulation, and injection techniques. Certified in Acupuncture medicine.

    Type: Bunions, ingrown toenails, sprains, diabetic foot care, In-toeing, skin disorders, sport injuries, warts, corns, calluses, flat feet, heel spurs, fractures, and hammertoes.

    Tests: Digital radiology, splints or supports as needed, surgical removal or repair of condition, promote preventative foot care.

    Branch of medicine that deals with diagnosis and treatment of acute or chronic inflammation, muscle soreness and stiffness, and joint pain.

    Type: Diagnosis and treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis, gouty arthritis, degenerative joint disease, bursitis, fibromyalgia, and many other disorders.

    Tests: Digital X-rays, lab work, MRI, joint injection, steroid epidural injections for back pain, physical therapy, therapy pool, and medication regimes to improve pain control.

    SURGERY

    Branch of medicine dealing with operative procedures to correct deformities, repair injuries, and diagnosis and cure of certain diseases.

    Type: Diagnosis and evaluation of abdomen pain, ulcers, hernias, gallbladder disease, colon cancer, diverticulitis, colon polyps, appendicitis, bowel obstructions, excessive vaginal bleeding, intestine disease in need of removal, tubal ligations, vasectomy, evaluation of abnormal mammograms or breast lumps, and many other conditions

    Tests: In-house CT scans, biweekly mobile MRI, ultrasound, outpatient scopes to evaluate the esophagus and stomach (EGD), and colon (colonoscopy). Hernia repairs can be done by an open procedure or done laprascopically. Colon resection and colostomy can be done if needed. Other surgeries included appendectomy, hysterectomy, tubal ligation, vasectomy, sterotatic breast biopsy, incisional breast biopsy with needle localization, mastectomy, removal of lipomas or abnormal skin lesions can be done here. Nuclear studies are also available.

    UROLOGY

    Branch of medicine that deals with urinary tract, kidneys, bladder, of both sexes and the male genital tract.

    Type: Diagnosis and treatment of frequent recurrent urinary tract infections, blood in the urine, inability to empty the bladder, uncontrolled urine leakage, renal calculi (kidney stones), cancer of the bladder, cancer of the prostate, enuresis (bedwetting), scrotal mass or pain, testicular cancer, cystocele (female bladder hernia), and impotence.

    Tests: Lab work, x-rays of kidney and structures, CT scans, cystoscopy to look inside the bladder with scope to check for chronic irritated bladder, bladder cancer, diverticulum (pouches) of the bladder, or bladder stones. Ultrasound to check the kidneys or scotum. Catheter insertions or changes. Bladder scanner will calculate amount of urine in the bladder without any further inspection or invasive procedure. The bladder scanner results help evaluate need for treatment, success of medication therapy, and help with making a diagnosis. The bladder scanner can be used on patients while in a wheelchair.
